Calling all first-year students!
Want to make a real impact on student life at KCL? Join FirstYearHack 2025 and use the power of gamification to revolutionize the student experience. Whether you're a coder or a creative thinker, this hackathon is for you.
Choose your path: the Technical Route (coding a Windows desktop or Chrome-runnable web application with gamification elements) or the Non-Technical Route (designing a gamified solution with mockups and wireframes). Both require a 4-minute video (demo or pitch).
Your challenge: gamify everyday student life at KCL. Pick a category, address a real problem, and make student life more engaging and rewarding. Check out our example projects for inspiration!
Requirements
What to Build
Technical Route (Code-based Projects):
- A functional Windows-compatible desktop application (.exe or Java, runnable via IntelliJ/BlueJ) OR a web application (runnable on Chrome).
- Your application must incorporate at least two gamification elements (e.g., leaderboards, badges, progress tracking).
Non-Technical Route (Design-based Projects):
- A well-defined gamified concept for enhancing student life at KCL.
- Your concept must include at least two gamification elements.
- Visual representations of your concept, such as mockups, wireframes, or other design assets.
! IMPORTANT !
- Your project must be original and be developed/created on the day of the hackathon (e.g. you can't submit a project you've already worked on but you can use a project idea).
- You are not allowed to use any paid resources or trials of resources (e.g. you're not allowed to use the OpenAI API but you can use a free huggingface LLM model).
- Use of AI Chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot) are allowed! (We wouldn't be able to tell anyway)
- Other than that, you can use anything that is free.
What to Submit
Technical Route (Code-based Projects):
- Project Code: A public GitHub repository containing all project code.
- Installation Guide: A clear installation guide within the README.md file of your repository.
- Demo Video: A 4-minute video demonstrating your application's functionality and gamification elements.
Non-Technical Route (Design-based Projects):
- Concept Presentation: A PDF, presentation (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.), or Figma file detailing your gamified concept.
- Pitch Video: A 4-minute video pitching your gamified concept and showcasing its potential impact.
General Submission Requirements (Both Routes):
- Original Work: All submissions must be original work created by the team for this hackathon.
- Deadline: All submissions (code, design documents, and videos) must be submitted by the specified deadline (February 26th, 2025, 7:00 PM). Specific submission instructions will be provided.

Judging Criteria
-
Creativity & Innovation
This assesses the originality and novelty of the idea. Judges will be looking for projects that think outside the box and offer fresh approaches to gamifying student life. -
Gamification Elements
This evaluates how effectively gamification principles are integrated into the solution. Judges will consider the choice of gamification mechanics, their relevance to the project's goals, and their potential to engage users. -
Usability (Technical) / Design Quality (Non-Technical)
For technical projects, this focuses on how user-friendly and intuitive the application is. For non-technical projects, it assesses the quality and polish of the design, including mockups, wireframes, and overall presentation -
Feasibility
This criterion considers the practicality and achievability of the proposed solution. Judges will assess whether the project is realistic and could potentially be implemented in a real-world context. -
Demo/Pitch Quality
This assesses the 4-minute video's clarity and effectiveness. Judges seek a concise, engaging presentation clearly communicating the project's value and functionality (technical demos) or vision and potential (non-technical pitches).
